This is how you chill!

Friday we woke up and had planned on paddle boarding, but we sat back and drank our coffee just enjoying the thought of not having to do a thing. We took a stroll down to the Maya beach hotel for breakfast and some ocean views. We took the beach back to the hotel and then spent the morning on the beach soaking in the rays.

Our hotel has a shuttle that goes in to town a few times a day. We caught the 2pm shuttle into town and strolled around this cute little town. It is very laid back and we loved it. First up was a light lunch a The Shak- jerk chicken nachos. Oh my they were so spicy- but very tasty. We walked the boardwalk and checked out all the galleries, craft stalls and great places to stay. We stopped for some tutti frutti ice cream and ended up at the Barefoot bar on the beach. The bar was hopping, turns out tonight is the start of Garifuna days. Garifuna Settlement Day is a public holiday in Belize, celebrated each year on November 19. The holiday was created by Belizean civil rights activist, Thomas Vincent Ramos, in 1941. It was recognized as a public holiday in the southern districts of Belize in 1943, and declared a national holiday in 1977. The holiday celebrates the settlement of the Garifuna people in Belize after being exiled from the Grenadines by the British army. The major festivities for the holiday occur in the town of Dangriga, including parades, street music, and traditional dancing, but it spills over into Placencia and Seine Bight just north of town. We chatted to some locals and almost decided to head to the drum festivals, but then decided not to.

A great afternoon spent in town and we caught a cab back to the hotel. The shuttle then drove us to Mangos down the street for dinner. They had live music and we were hungry. I had snook for dinner and Frank a pizza. We had a great time- even chatted with the owner for a while. The hotel shuttle picked us up on the way back from town. Another great day in Paradise.
