Day by Day Travels

We left Entebbe at 8am in the morning for the long drive to Kibale! We had planned on sitting back with music and audiobooks but were so absorbed by the villages and countryside we passed, the 6 hours flew by. It was a very red dusty and bumpy ride- but just incredible to watch this strange new world go by. Town and after town. We flet safe in our Landcruiser – all tourist vehicles in Uganda are marked as such and therefore get left alone. Seems to be the opposite of some countries where you don’t want to be marked as a tourist- here that IS what you want.

We had lunch at a local spot in Fort Portal- a buffet of all the local eats. A short wander around the town was very interesting. Then we were back on the road and very quickly entered the Kibale forest. A green jungle filled with wildlife. After we passed the fields of tea we were ambushed by the baboons in our way. This one guy really wanted in and would have been inside if he’d had the chance! Stopping only seemed to encourage him, so off we drove. Arriving at the primate lodge – it was just gorgeous- the entire team of staff greeted us and we felt so welcome. We had our welcome drink and then were walked up the hill to our delightful cottage. Set in amongst the trees it was just stunning- we opened the doors to the patio and the sounds of monkeys calling was so loud- welcome! We settled in and then Frank decided to go for a run- but those baboons. I took my book up to the main lodge as I was going to relax. But I met the most interesting couple – ex LA detectives- they had travelled far and wide- and we chatted for ages. I love that about travel – all the people you get to meet and share. Dinner was under the main roof and looking in to the forest with the sounds of monkeys and cicadas filling the night air. Just an incredible experience.
