Day by Day Travels

Saturday we were up early for our caving adventure. Our ride- who turned out to be a taxi ride- was prompt at 7:30. We drove inland for 1hr 45 minutes to get to our destination. Our guide and one other family where there to greet us. After a brief orientation, we donned helmets, head lamps, life vests and a rubber tube- then we set off on a hike through the jungle to the cave. The mosquitos were aplenty, but the walk was rally beautiful. We arrived and descended into the pure blackness very quickly, via a slippery staircase. We hiked up stream for a long while and then we were in the water! It was cool at first, but soon we were used to it and working our way up stream, paddling furiously upstream- no easy task at times.  We had to squeeze through some very tight crevices and cracks.  We went up for a while, before we let the current take us back down- we drifted for a good 90 minutes, enjoying the utter darkness for small periods as we turned off our headlights. It was quite an amazing experience that was over too soon.  We ascended from the darkness and were blinded by the light.  A short, wet hike back and the we were off. Our cab driver then took us for a local lunch at a roadside lean to. Then lastly a dip in the inland blue hole. This was close to where we had been for the caving and a short hike down to the hole.  The jungle enveloped the hole and made the entire area pretty cool. Frank was not getting into the cold water- I felt very refreshed! Then we had the long car ride back to the hotel. What a great adventure.

Back at the hotel we spent the afternoon on the beach – our last day in this amazing country! We decided to head back in to town to Rumfish Y Vino for dinner. We took a cab in to town and had the best meal we have had all week- fish for me and Frank had the Beef and Reef! The dessert was a coconut flan that will not be easily replicated! Our last stop for the night was the Tipsy Tuna and a last rum drink! We are not ready to leave.
