Thursday Danica was not feeling well and I was not much better. So the girls chilled at the apartment, I took all the medicine I could and Frank and I took off in cab to downtown Lima to see the colonial buildings and museums. We passed on the church- having been in so many European cathedrals. But we did head to the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco- the catacombs were small, but the entire church was gorgeous (no photos allowed). There were paintings that were as big as rooms, stunning artwork and libraries, just gorgeous. Our guide was very efficient and full of info!
After we popped in to the Gastronomy Museum- saw the history of food in Peru- including the over 4,000 varieties of potatoes in this small country. I needed a cool break after that and a Starbucks presented itself. We took a rest and then walked down the pedestrian walkway that connects the 2 squares- Plaza Mayor de Lima and Plaza San Martin. Then it was a quick cab ride back and relax before hitting the Indian market. Delaney came with us to the market and we caught up on all our souvenir shopping, including hats, pants, ornaments and fun trinkets. Then Delaney was done and wanting to chill at the apartment some more.
After the afternoon at the Indian market. Frank and I headed to the ruins in Mira Flores. The walk was scary, as the traffic in Lima is crazy, there are no rules and everyone is on a mission to get somewhere. We walked the 30 minutes there and when we got there it was closed. We had just missed the opening hours by about 10 minutes- disappointed as we were, we were able to enter and see a bit from the gates.
The Huaca Pucllana, is a great adobe and clay pyramid located in the Miraflores district of central, built from seven staggered platforms. It served as an important ceremonial and administrative center for the advancement of the Lima Culture, a society which developed in the Peruvian Central Coast between the years of 200 AD and 700 AD. We took the crazy walk back to the apartment- by this time all medication had worn off and I was done. Danica and I caught up on cable TV; while Frank and Delaney had a delicious dinner at Panchita Sazón Criolla- they send us lots of photos and it looked really good- but we were on no shape to eat.
